Little is recorded about the sitter in this small head-and-shoulders portrait of an unidentified man turned slightly to the right. It is a sixth-plate daguerreotype, a compact format popular for portraits in the 1840s and 1850s, and its case back carries a central floral design within a wreath along with a hallmark showing a paschal lamb and the number 40. The plate was a 1976 gift from Mrs. Alexander Macomb to the Library of Congress and is part of the Rodgers Family Papers, a family collection spanning 1740 to 1977.
