Identity is the open question with this half-plate daguerreotype, which the Library of Congress lists as probably Thomas Wilson Dorr, with Edward Everett and Prince Bonaparte offered as alternatives. Dorr was the Rhode Island reformer who led the 1841 to 1842 Dorr Rebellion for broader suffrage. Made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1854, the plate has the gold toning that was often applied to studio daguerreotypes of the era to warm the tones and protect the image.
