This daguerreotype is a copy of a painted portrait rather than a direct sitting, showing a man's head and shoulders turned toward the viewer. The sitter is unidentified, though one record suggests Robert Morris as a possibility. Mathew Brady's studio, known for portraits of many public figures, produced the plate sometime between 1844 and 1860, and the sixth-plate format was a small, common size for portraits of that era. The plate later passed through the U.S. War College and entered the Library of Congress in 1920.
