Little is known about the sitter in this small sixth-plate daguerreotype, which shows an unidentified man seated and turned to his right in a head-and-shoulders pose. The brass mat is stamped with the name of Ball & Thomas, a studio at 120 West Fourth Street in Cincinnati, Ohio, which places the portrait in that river city around 1858 to 1860. Like most daguerreotypes of the period, it is a unique image on a silvered copper plate, and its mirror-like surface shows the picture clearly only at certain angles. Cincinnati studios produced many such keepsakes for families able to afford a portrait.
