Rather than a sitter before the lens, this sixth-plate daguerreotype records a painted portrait of an unidentified woman, shown head and shoulders and facing forward. Copying paintings by daguerreotype was a common practice in the 1840s and 1850s, when a camera offered a quick, inexpensive way to reproduce a likeness. The small plate has been hand-colored, with pigment added over the silvered surface to bring tone to the face and dress, and its plain back and case reflect the modest, widely made style of the period.
