A small sixth-plate daguerreotype shows a woman in a head-and-shoulders view, facing the camera, and an accompanying note identifies her as the mother of Watts Todd Miller. Her son's wife was Olive Thorne Miller, the naturalist and writer whose real name was Harriet Mann Miller. The plate dates from between 1840 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were the leading form of portraiture and each was a unique, mirror-bright image often kept in a small cased frame. The photographer is unidentified and the hallmark is illegible, so the maker remains unknown.
