A small sixth-plate daguerreotype of Mr. Miller, shown head and shoulders and facing the camera, is part of the papers of Harriet Mann Miller, the writer who wrote under the name Olive Thorne Miller. The accompanying note identifies him as the father of Watts Todd Miller, and the plate is kept with a companion image of his wife, the sitter's mother. The photographer is unidentified, and the hallmark is illegible. Made between 1840 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were the dominant portrait process, the image has a mirror-like silver surface that changes with the angle of light.
