Scratched into the face of this plate are the words "Van Ness, NY" and the number 103, marks that show how such portraits were labeled and filed. John Peter Van Ness, who died in 1846, was a New York public figure whose career reached back to the early republic, so this likeness comes from the last years of his life. Made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1846, it reflects an early photographic process that required sitters to hold still for long exposures.
