This sixth-plate daguerreotype shows John J. Crittenden, the Kentucky senator, in a head-and-shoulders view facing the camera, with gold toning that softens the silver surface. Crittenden, who also served as U.S. attorney general under two presidents, was a prominent figure in the 1840s, and the image was known widely through an engraving by T. Doney in *The American Review* in 1846. That engraving was made from a daguerreotype by Anthony, Clark, and Co., and the record notes that this surviving plate may itself be a copy. Its production is credited to Mathew Brady's studio, a reminder of how New York portrait studios of the period circulated likenesses of public men.
