Scratched into the back of this half-plate daguerreotype is the name "Col. Donophan," a spelling variant of Alexander William Doniphan, the Missouri lawyer who commanded a volunteer mounted regiment through New Mexico and into Chihuahua during the Mexican-American War. The plate was produced in Mathew Brady's studio at some point between 1844 and 1860, and its gold toning gives the face a warm, subtle sheen typical of the period's best work. The Library of Congress acquired the plate through a 1920 transfer from the U.S. War College.
