A walking stick held in view marks this head-and-shoulders portrait of Albert Gallatin, shown facing front, as a likeness of an older man. Gallatin, born in Geneva in 1761, served as Treasury Secretary under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison and later worked as a diplomat in France and Britain. He was in his eighties when the plate was made sometime between 1844 and 1860. The record describes this as a copy daguerreotype, with the original probably made by Anthony, Edwards & Co. and the work credited to Mathew Brady's studio.
