Former New York governor William C. Bouck faces the camera in this head-and-shoulders study, a sixth-plate daguerreotype whose silver surface has been gold-toned. Bouck led New York from 1843 to 1844 and died in 1859, so the plate was made in the final years of his life. It came from Mathew Brady's studio, which photographed many of the political and military leaders of the period. Gold toning sharpened the image and helped protect its delicate surface, a detail worth noticing in an early plate.
