Charles Bradhurst, son of Samuel and Mary according to an accompanying note, sits for this sixth plate daguerreotype, and the subject's birth year of 1840 places him at roughly ten to twenty when it was made. The head-and-shoulders pose faces the camera squarely, and the small plate size was one that made portraits affordable for many families. The eight-pointed star on the case and the name Walter Scott Shinn stamped on the back of the plate may point to the workshop that produced it. Daguerreotypes like this one show their finest detail, and their mirror-like surface, only when tilted to catch the light at the right angle.
