A sixth-plate, gold-toned daguerreotype, this head-and-shoulders portrait shows James Buchanan facing the camera. The record credits Mathew Brady's studio and notes that the plate may be a copy, a common way to reproduce a sitter's likeness after the original sitting. Buchanan had served as a Pennsylvania senator, Secretary of State under James K. Polk, and minister to Britain before he became the nation's fifteenth president in 1857, so the image dates from a period when he was a prominent public figure.
