A daguerreotype of a painted portrait of James Buchanan, shown head and shoulders and turned toward the left, preserves a likeness of the man in paint rather than a direct sitting. Buchanan, a Pennsylvania lawyer and Democrat, served as the nation's fifteenth president from 1857 to 1861, a term dominated by the sectional crisis over slavery that led to secession. Photographing existing paintings was a common practice in the 1850s, when families and admirers wanted portable copies of notable people they could not sit for. The small case, decorated with a scroll and a ring of flowers, reflects the ornamental taste of the period.
