The sitter is James Curtis Booth (1810-1888), a Philadelphia chemist and metallurgist, and the portrait stands out for its studio. The brass mat is stamped with the name of M. A. Root and his address on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, a fashionable commercial district where Root ran one of the city's best-known daguerreotype galleries in the late 1840s and 1850s. Shown in profile, facing left, Booth is framed head-and-shoulders on a quarter-plate silvered copper plate, a format that was common for portraits of the period. The decorative scroll and central leaf pattern on the case reflects the mid-century taste for ornate housings that protected these fragile, mirror-like images.
