Scratched into the back of the plate is the inscription "Col. Gardner," which points to the sitter's military connection and to the U.S. War College, where the daguerreotype was held before its transfer to the Library of Congress in 1920. Mathew Brady's studio made the portrait sometime between 1844 and 1860, a period when daguerreotypes were the most popular form of portrait photography and Brady's galleries attracted many prominent sitters. Each daguerreotype is a single, unrepeatable image on a polished silver-coated copper plate, so its fine detail and mirror-like surface are best appreciated up close.
