Turned to the right in this quarter-plate daguerreotype, the sitter is named in pencil on the back as Josiah Johnson Hawes, though the record only suggests it may be a self-portrait. Hawes (1808–1901) ran a Boston studio with Albert Sands Southworth, and the partnership was among the most admired American portrait operations of the 1840s and 1850s, prized for sharp detail and careful lighting. The hallmark on the plate dates it to between 1850 and 1854, when the daguerreotype was still the leading form of portrait photography.
