This sixth-plate daguerreotype shows Samuel F. B. Morse in a head-and-shoulders view, turned to the right, with a scroll-patterned case that suits the mid-1840s. Morse was a portrait painter before he became known for the electric telegraph, and he had seen the daguerreotype process in Paris in 1839 and brought it back to America, where he promoted and taught it. The portrait, made about the time he was introducing the telegraph to the public, shows a man who was already at the center of two new technologies. The small mirror-like plate is worth looking at closely, since its surface changes with the angle of light.
