Samuel F. B. Morse, the painter who later developed the electric telegraph, sits for this half-plate daguerreotype, one of the portraits made at Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860. Morse was among the first Americans to take up the daguerreotype after its 1839 announcement, and he taught the process to Brady, who went on to become known for his photographs of Civil War soldiers. The plate is gold toned, which sharpens the image and adds a warm tint, and the numbers scratched on its face and back record its handling in collections, including a 1920 transfer to the Library of Congress.
