A small sixteenth-plate daguerreotype, touched with hand color, shows Henry Rodgers in a head-and-shoulders view turned toward the right. A label on its oval red velvet case gives his dates as 1823 to 1854, so the portrait was probably made around 1850, near the end of his short life. Daguerreotypes of this period were prized for their mirror-like detail, and hand coloring was a common way to add warmth to a sitter's face. The picture is part of the Rodgers Family Papers at the Library of Congress, which places it among a family's personal records.
