Few daguerreotypes of working newspapermen from this period survive with their sitters named, and this quarter-plate portrait shows Benjamin Perley Poore (1820-1887), who became one of Washington's best-known journalists. He reported from the capital for several newspapers and later wrote memoirs of its political life, so the portrait captures a man who would come to chronicle the city's public figures. The photographer is unidentified, but the image's date of about 1850 places it in the early years of the daguerreotype, when the process was still expensive and portraits were often made for personal keepsakes.
