A handwritten note identifies the subject of this small sixteenth-plate daguerreotype as Augusta Currie Bradhurst Field, called Gussie, who was eight in 1854, though the question mark after the name suggests the identification was not entirely certain. The brass mat is stamped with the name of Quinby, a New York studio at 385 Broadway, and the scroll-patterned case with its central oval reflects the mass-produced housings that made these tiny portraits affordable to middle-class families. Pictures like this were meant to be held close and opened in the hand rather than hung on a wall.
