The case sets this portrait apart. Its inside lid is embossed with the name Anson and the address 589 Broadway, New York, and the brass mat carries the same stamp. Broadway was one of the city's busiest commercial streets in the 1850s, lined with studios competing for sitters. Ninth plate daguerreotypes like this one were small, mirror-bright images on silvered copper, protected under glass and set in decorative cases such as this floral, scrolled example. The unidentified woman, shown head and shoulders and facing the camera, is one of the many ordinary sitters who made the medium popular.
