A business card tucked behind the plate of this ninth-plate daguerreotype names J. White & Co., whose Providence studio on Westminster Street promised 25-cent portraits and "the best arranged light in the state," reached by a single flight of stairs. The studio's address in city directories dates the portrait to between 1854 and 1860. It shows an unidentified woman in a head-and-shoulders pose, hand-colored, and set in a case decorated with an oval of mixed flowers framed by scrolls. Inexpensive small portraits like this one were typical of the period, when daguerreotypists competed on price as much as on skill.
