Gold toning gives this whole-plate daguerreotype its warm, silvery depth, and the sitter's three-quarter pose, turned slightly to the right, was a common format in 1850s portraiture. The record credits the image to the studio of Mathew Brady, whose New York gallery drew many prominent sitters before the Civil War. The woman is unidentified, though the record offers the poet Phoebe Cary as an alternative identification. The plate later passed to the U.S. War College and entered the Library of Congress collection in 1920.
