Seated in a chair and turned to his left, this unidentified man wears a hat and a dark glove on one hand, details that give the portrait its character. The whole-plate daguerreotype dates from between 1851 and 1860, when the process was at its height and a sitter's clothing and pose were carefully chosen. The record credits Mathew Brady's studio, whose New York portraits of the period were widely admired. The plate's mirror-like silver surface shows the image clearly only at certain angles, a quality worth noticing when viewing the original.
