A woman of about 65 sits nearly in profile, hands folded in her lap and light gloves on, in this gold-toned quarter-plate daguerreotype made in the 1850s. The back of the plate bears a scratched "215" and a Rinhart hallmark, and one corner has been trimmed. Mathew Brady's studio produced it, and its records show it passed to the U.S. War College before being transferred in 1920. Her identity is not recorded, so the portrait stands as a close look at everyday dress and posture in the decade before the Civil War.
