The most telling detail is the label inside the back of the case, which names Wm. Shew, a miniature case maker and dealer in daguerreotype apparatus on Court Street in Boston, opposite the head of Hanover Street. Shew supplied cases and materials to working daguerreotypists, so the label connects this portrait to the busy commercial trade in Boston in the late 1840s and 1850s. The woman sits half-length with one arm resting on a draped table, a common pose of the period, and the sixth-plate size was a popular choice for small portraits. The photographer is unidentified, but the case's hallmark and scrolled oval frame help date the object and suggest where it was made.
