A stereoscopic daguerreotype, made as a pair of nearly identical images to be viewed together through a stereoscope, this full-length portrait shows an unidentified woman seated beside a fur-draped chair, with what may be fur cuffs and a bonnet on a table covered in cloth. The gold-embossed case is stamped with the name Mayall, linking it to a photographer who worked in London and the United States during the 1850s. Heavy furs and carefully arranged props were typical of mid-century portraiture, which often showed off costume and possessions, and the record dates the plate to between 1853 and 1860.
