Seated at a small draped table, a woman turns three-quarters to the right in this full-length half-plate daguerreotype, a fuller view than the close-cropped portraits of the era often gave. Someone scratched "Mrs. Knox Walker, Penn." into the plate, but the record lists that name only as an alternative identification, so it remains unconfirmed. The plate is attributed to Mathew Brady's studio, and gold toning, applied after exposure, helped sharpen its detail and protect its delicate surface.
