Few details identify the sitter of this small hand-colored daguerreotype, a man shown from roughly the waist up, full face, with one arm resting on a draped table. Sixth-plate portraits like this one, about 2 3/4 by 3 1/4 inches, were a popular and inexpensive format in the 1850s, and hand-applied color on the cheeks or clothing was an added touch. The picture is held within papers of the American Colonization Society, founded in 1817 to resettle Afro-Americans in Liberia, though the photographer and sitter remain unrecorded.
