A man sits for the camera with a cat in this small ninth-plate daguerreotype, a subject that stands out among the period's usually formal portraits. The sitter and photographer are unidentified, but the case carries the maker's mark Rinhart 66 and an urn-and-leaves design on the back, typical of the cased keepsakes sold during the 1840s and 1850s. Exposures in these early years could run many seconds, so sitters had to hold still in stiff poses, which makes the animal's easy presence alongside him worth noticing. The Library of Congress holds the plate in its daguerreotype collection, and it was included in the 2003 to 2004 exhibition *American Treasures of the Library of Congress*.
