Relatively few daguerreotypes from this period show a couple seated full-length, since early exposures demanded long stillness and studios often framed sitters from the waist up. Here a man and a woman sit together within a floral-patterned frame, and the brass mat bears the stamp "F. Grice," which suggests the maker of the mount rather than the photographer. Dated around 1855, the plate belongs to the decade when daguerreotypes were a popular portrait format in America, and its half-plate size and full-body pose show how much sitters valued a prominent, formal record of themselves. The Library of Congress acquired it in 1999, and the sitters remain unidentified.
