Hickson W. Field and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Bradhurst Field, sit together in this sixth-plate daguerreotype, with the husband seated in a chair and the wife wearing elaborate jewelry. The photographer is unidentified, but the image dates from between 1845 and 1860, when small cased daguerreotypes were a popular form of portrait. Exposures were long, so sitters had to hold still, which gives such pictures their formal, composed stillness. The case, with its central floral motif surrounded by scrolls, is worth a look as well. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the family of William B. Osgood Field.
