Mary Ann Bartlett sits three-quarters length beside a draped table holding books, a detail that points to the reading and learning prized in middle-class homes of the 1850s. The sixth-plate daguerreotype remains in its case, whose central floral motif and surrounding scrolls, along with a Rinhart hallmark, help place its making in the mid-century trade. Portraits this small could be carried in a pocket or locket, and families relied on them to keep images of relatives before paper prints became common. The accompanying label identifies her as the mother of sculptor Paul Wayland Bartlett and gives her death date as May 4, 1901. The photographer is not identified.
