Seated at a table draped with a cloth, one arm resting on it, John Maunsell Bradhurst looks slightly to the left in this quarter plate daguerreotype, its cheeks and lips softened by hand coloring. Bradhurst lived only from 1837 to 1867, so the portrait dates from a brief period when daguerreotypes were the leading form of photographic portraiture in American cities. The case is embossed with the address of the Anson studio at 589 Broadway in New York, a reminder that such pictures were made by commercial galleries serving urban families. A later New York restorer also handled the plate, and the family gave it to the Library of Congress in 1997 with its original case.
