Seated in black judicial robes and turned slightly to his left, Justice James Moore Wayne of the U.S. Supreme Court looks out from this whole-plate daguerreotype. A Georgia native, Wayne joined the high court in 1835 on appointment by Andrew Jackson and served until his death in 1867, a span that covered the sectional crisis leading to the Civil War. The photographer is unidentified, but the mirror-bright detail typical of daguerreotypes of about 1850 shows in the fabric of the robes and the sitter's face. The Library of Congress acquired the plate in 1996.
