A whole-plate daguerreotype shows John McLean seated and facing the camera in judicial robes, a formal pose that suits a man who sat on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1829 until his death in 1861. Before his appointment, McLean had served as Postmaster General, and he later became known for his dissent in the Dred Scott case. The photographer is unidentified, but the sharp detail and tonal richness of the plate show why daguerreotypes of this kind were so prized around 1850.
