Woodbury is shown in the black judicial robe he wore as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, a seat he held from 1845 until his death in 1851. Before the bench he had been governor of New Hampshire, a U.S. senator, and secretary of the navy and then secretary of the treasury under Presidents Jackson and Van Buren. This whole-plate daguerreotype, made around 1850, is a unique positive on a silvered copper plate, so it exists in only one copy. Its formal, front-facing pose reflects the dignified style that public men often chose for portraits of this period.
