The Reverend Henry Anthon appears here in a half-length view, turned to face the camera in a robe and holding a book. The plate is a sixth-plate daguerreotype, gold toned to deepen its tones and strengthen the silvery surface, and it was probably made as a copy of an earlier image rather than from a live sitting. A New York newspaper notice from September 1843 is the source for identifying the sitter, and the picture comes from the Mathew Brady studio. Like all daguerreotypes, it is a single mirror-like object whose image shows best when tilted toward the light.
