Shown in half-length with a book in hand, Edward Wilmot Blyden sits for this sixth-plate daguerreotype, its brass mat stamped with the New York address of the Anson studio at 589 Broadway. Blyden, born in the Danish West Indies in 1832, emigrated to Liberia in 1851 under the auspices of the American Colonization Society, which had been founded in 1817 to resettle Black Americans in Africa. He went on to become a writer, educator and public official whose essays on African identity and education shaped debate across the Atlantic. The record notes that this may be a copy daguerreotype, which suggests the image was reproduced from an earlier likeness.
