A young Mabel Hubbard, who would later marry Alexander Graham Bell, sits for this half-length portrait made around 1860, when she was about three. The sixth-plate daguerreotype has been cut down from its original size, and only the plain leather back of its case survives, so the maker remains unidentified. Mabel later lost her hearing to scarlet fever in early childhood and worked closely with her husband on deaf education, and the picture is preserved within the Library of Congress's Bell family photographs.
