Few early portraits name their studio as plainly as this one, since the brass mat is stamped "R. Cornelius, Philada." Robert Cornelius, a Philadelphia manufacturer turned photographer, was among the city's first daguerreotypists, and his studio produced many sitter portraits in the early 1840s. This small sixth-plate plate shows John Henry Frederick Sachse seated, half-length and facing the camera, with the long exposure times of the period visible in the stillness of his pose. The plain leather case survives with only its back, so the mat and the image itself carry most of the object's history.
