Mabel Hubbard Gardiner, who later became Mabel Bell and married Alexander Graham Bell, appears here as a young girl in a half-length portrait taken around 1860. The image is a sixth-plate daguerreotype, a small, mirror-bright positive on silvered copper, and it survives in a plain leather case with a push-button closure. Daguerreotypes like this one were the dominant portrait medium of the 1840s and 1850s, and by about 1860 they were giving way to paper prints, which makes this early and intimate likeness a useful record of the period. The photographer is unidentified, but the piece is part of the Bell family photograph holdings at the Library of Congress.
