Lyman Beecher, the Connecticut-born Congregational minister, sits for this half-length portrait turned squarely toward the camera, a pose that gives his face the full weight of the frame. The daguerreotype was made in the late 1840s, when Beecher was in his seventies and already famous as a fiery preacher and reformer, and it came out of Mathew Brady's studio, which made many of the period's notable portraits. Gold toning, applied to the silver surface after exposure, was a common way to deepen the image and protect its fragile surface. Beecher was the father of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Henry Ward Beecher, both of whom became well-known writers and speakers.
