The sitter is catalogued as William Allen, though the record also offers the alternative identification of Hon. Elisha H. Allen, a Hawaiian minister, so the name remains open. Shown at half length and nearly facing the camera, this half-plate daguerreotype was gold toned, a treatment that deepened its tones and helped protect the delicate silver surface. It was made in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose sitters in the 1840s and 1850s included many prominent Americans. A number scratched on the back and a 1920 transfer from the U.S. War College are among its later traces.
