Identified through an engraving of William Adams in Buttre's *The American Portrait Gallery*, this half-length daguerreotype shows the sitter facing the camera on a half-plate silvered copper plate. It was produced in Mathew Brady's studio at some point between 1844 and 1860, when the daguerreotype was the dominant portrait process and Brady's New York rooms drew many notable sitters. Scratched numbers on the face and back of the plate suggest studio or later cataloguing marks, and the plate came to the Library of Congress through a 1920 transfer from the U.S. War College.
