The leather case is the first thing to notice: its corners carry a floral design, and the brass mat is stamped F. Grice, a mark that points to the maker or seller. Inside, a velvet pad printed with a geometric pattern cradles a sixth-plate daguerreotype of a bearded man, shown in half-length and facing the camera. Around 1855, portraits like this were sold as small, portable keepsakes, and the closed case protected the silvered plate from tarnish and scratches. The sitter is unidentified, so the portrait speaks mainly through its materials and its period.
