The name F. Grice, stamped on the brass mat, and the circle motif on the case set this half-length portrait of an unidentified man apart. Made around 1855, when daguerreotypes were at the height of their popularity, the image is sealed on a silvered copper plate behind glass, so its surface reflects like a mirror and shifts with the viewer's angle. Such cases were often kept as keepsakes, and this sitter, turned to his left, is one of many people of the period whose names went unrecorded.
